Being a You Tuber seems like it’s one of the most funnest things you could possibly do online. You get to create your own content, Record and produce a video that was made entirely by you and post it to the world. The thing I discovered is it’s awesome in the beginning. I created Melle Indie because I wanted to stop being so afraid to do things in front of a camera. I had a fear of people seeing me and I was afraid of what they would think of the “REAL” me. I made a deal with myself to do (10) videos online and not erase them. After the first upload in February 2017 I was still scared and had no idea what I was doing and to be honest I still don’t and as of this blog it’s May 17th 2019 over two years later and 333+ videos uploaded so far.
This is my FIRST EVER video on YouTube as Melle Indie. I was so nervous and didn’t know what to do so I mocked myself because I was just clueless on how my You Tube channel should start.
I went through so many phases! At first I wanted to do comedy/parody videos then I went into a eating video phase and started to make mukbang videos which led to me getting sick from consuming so much red meat and fast food. But also there was a lot of good that came out of my You Tube channel like changing my lifestyle right there in the middle of uploading and not consuming red meat ever again. I actually came to that epiphany after watching “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives” documentaries.
And boom! Right on camera I changed the way I ate yes it was hard and I tried to be a vegan but I’m more comfortable following vegetarian and vegan food plans. I’m not a perfectionist either I cheat from time to time and eat a hot wing or some seafood (Juicy Crab is amazing!)
I also branched out and started trying different types of content with hobbies. I enjoyed like thrift store hauls/try ons, make up videos, story times and that is where I feel comfortable. I’m random in person and my You Tube channel is random just like it’s owner.
There is consequence to changing your channel and doing all types of videos like this. When I went from being a “Mukbang Channel” to a channel that did a variety of videos my views dropped drastically and I lost many subscribers because your in a more than one new category with new keywords and the people that were coming for Mukbang videos did not want to see Story times and Thrift store hauls.
When your doing You Tube you have to make the decision to stick with a niche (one category) or be in a lot of different categories. I’m going to be extremely honest You Tube channels that stay in one lane are going to grow faster because there keywords are the same and will rank quicker in the search engine. This is why a beauty channel, tech channel or gaming channel can grow so fast they only upload one type of video. So please be aware when creating a You Tube channel that has different types of videos it’s going to grow at a slower pace unless you get a viral video or a videos keywords rank good enough to get consistent views.
So at this point it’s May 2019 and the bulk of my videos are vlogs and I like the freedom of vlogging but I burn out very quickly so I brought my dry erase board back out and I’m going to create a schedule and record on certain days.
As you can see I’m back to writing on my blog! I’m not the best writer but it’s a great way to get out those long winded conversations in a written form. I took a sketch comedy writing class last year in October 2018 and we did alot of freestyle writing which is actually helping with my blog writing. Instead of sitting there and thinking about what to write you just start writing about anything until you find something you want to continue on. So even though I was taking the class for comedy writing it’s helping in my blog creation process also.
This post was out of nowhere but I’m really trying to see what I’m trying to do with my You Tube for 2019 and give some inside on a small (micro) You Tuber with 1,766 Subscribers and 208K+ views (as of 5/17/2019)
So are you starting a You Tube in 2019? I will continue to post by behind the scenes thoughts about being a small You Tuber to give my two cents on what’s going on in my head while the platform changes. Thank you for reading I will make sure to update with more content in the future!
